First steps outside

My four hens took their first steps outside yesterday.

The day before I opened the coop door but they didn’t go into the yard. They were afraid.

This time they made it all the way to the front porch. There they checked to see if the cats had left any food.

Chickens have good memories. First, they were afraid to go outside, thinking the coyotes might be lurking nearby. Second, they remembered about the cat food.

Each day I will weigh if it is nice enough to let them roam the yard or to stay inside. Wisconsin weather can be fickled and if snow happens to return, the hens will stay inside. They hate putting their feet in the cold snow.

Walking the farm lane

Rebecca, Sunny dog, and I went for a walk down the farm lane yesterday. We didn’t plan for mud. We should have.

It was a great day to be outside.

I debated about posting this video of me limping. It’s not the best look. My excuse is that I was getting tired and my shoes had a heavy layer of mud attached.

Next time we’ll bring the cart out and hope not to get stuck in the mud.

Rolling right along

I was lucky to have time to chaperone elementary school class trips when my children were young.

This account almost took me beyond my abilities when I strapped on roller skates.

FYI: my great uncle, Frank Pochrin (Grandma Jo’s brother), and his wife Aunt Mary roller-skated in competitions and showed their roller skating skills by giving demonstrations. I never saw them skate, but I heard stories about their skills. I just knew them as two lovely people. Uncle Frank was always joking.
