Feeding critters

Morning and night we feed our pets. Our inside cats and dog tell us what time it is. When the cats start meowing and annoying us, we know it’s time to set out fresh food. Sunny, our dog, goes along with the crowd. At meal times, he’s happy the cats annoy us.

Othello and Cruella might love one kind of cat food one day, but when I set out the same food the next day they sometimes turn their noses up at it and walk away. Of course, soon they will be begging for their meal, but this time I know that they are asking for treats, not that silly canned stuff.

The feral barn cats are not allowed in the house, but they still manage to let us know when they are ready to eat. There’s a bench outside our kitchen window. An outside cat or two will climb up and look inside the window. This usually happens when Bob and I are eating.

The peeper gives a pathetic look like it will starve if food doesn’t arrive soon. I then gather up their bucket, put in their kibble and save them from starvation.

These 12 barn cats are happily starving…not.

Last night I added the drippings from our roast. The cats gorged themselves. Since there was plenty to go around, no grumbling took place. After eating I was sure I heard them groan because they had eaten too much–they are so deprived.

Sunny boy

Sunny is family. It doesn’t matter that he has four legs and fur. This dog is definitely part of our family. He even looks a little like us.

Taking a walk with Sunny is good for the dog and good for me. I read somewhere that people are healthier when they have pets, especially a dog. I’m sure this is true. A dog never judges you. It just loves you even if you are having a bad day.

Sunny likes to start our walks by rolling in the ditch. I just hope that this time he hasn’t found something nasty to roll in.

We’ve had Sunny for nine years. He’s not only my walking companion, he’s also Bob’s pal, too.

One day–quite a while ago–Sunny thought he was a lapdog. He didn’t like the cats having the best seat in the house.

Today we took Sunny for a ride in our cart. It’s one of his favorite activities. As we drive he gets to look for wildlife. Too bad no birds or beasts showed up this time, not even a barn cat. Instead, as Bob drove, I went along the roadside ditch and picked up garbage. We all benefited from being out on a lovely Saturday afternoon and the countryside looks a whole lot neater.

Togetherness

Othello, the black cat, and Cruella the black and white cat

Othello has been our indoor pet cat for fifteen years. Cruella has been around our house for about ten years.

They are not best buds. These two compete for everything, even for a spot in the sun. This photo shows a rare time when they came close to being together. The sunshine drew them to the pet beds on our porch. It wasn’t long after I snapped this shot that they both moved.

When Bob is on his recliner, both cats vie for a place on his lap. If one walks into the living room and finds the other already in the place of honor, I can see that the other is not pleased. Usually it turns and leaves–I’m sure mumbling under its breath cat curses.

I had to share this rare site today. Let’s hope more sunshine is on the way for all of us. I think I’ll move my chair out where I can catch some rays on the porch, too.

Happy Easter

The Manzke family Easter dinner is next Sunday. Our children are heading to their in-laws today to celebrate. It’s quiet here, but that’s okay. Next weekend will make up for the quiet Bob and I have today.

Here are my colored eggs. They are fresh from our chickens and colored by our hens. Thank goodness they finally started laying again. During our extra cold winter, the hens molted! I thought they would freeze to death, but they survived and are healthy enough to give us their cackle-fruit.

May your Easter be filled with love and peace.

Bob and Sunny out for a ride

My husband Bob couldn’t wait to get outside this afternoon. It was the first really nice day he and I took the cart for a ride without family help.

Today Bob wanted to look at a plow he intends to sell but he needed some measurements off of it–too bad his helper (me) took so long trying to understand what he wanted to be measured–I wouldn’t let him off the cart to do the measuring as he gets a little wobbly and I didn’t want him falling.

Bob and Sunny (the dog’s not driving. Susan had to push him over so she could get in.

After we did our measuring, Bob and I drove back to the house where Sunny was waiting.

Our dog got so excited when he saw the cart coming for him, I thought he’d run out before I could put his leash on.

We three drove around the farmyard a couple of times, but that made Sunny happy and us, too. It was a good afternoon. Any day when we don’t need any doctors is a good day.
