Our chicks were hatched six weeks ago and have been growing fast ever since.
These birds are on their own now. Mother isn’t needed. As ‘teenagers’ they think they know everything and are often the last to go in to roost. We just hope that doesn’t make them dinner for local preditors.

It is a season for melons. Most are coming from the south, as they started growing earlier than here in Wisconsin. Today, I was thumping some watermelon at the grocery store looking for a tasty one.
After bringing the melon home, I sliced it into bits for Bob and me.
The extra treat came when I took the rind out for our chickens.
The melon was seedless, so there were no seeds to spit, yet it was enjoyed by all.
Daughter, Rebecca and son-in-law, Andy stopped by and we put them to work. The two of them dragged an air-conditioner from our basement, where it was stored, to the second floor. They then took the old air-conditioner from there and brought it downstairs and finally out the door.
Thanks a big bunch!!!! Now we will be able to sleep comfortably.
But since I didn’t take photos of the big move, which they wouldn’t have wanted anyway, I thought I’d add photos of cute chicks today.
These photo chicks were purchased. The chicks on our farm today were hatched by hens.
Warning! Do not try to get close to current chicks. The big white mother hen is mean and will come after you. She knows how to take care of her babies.
So there you have my blog for today. We’ll have to wait for tomorrow to see what I write next–but don’t bother asking me ahead of time. I rarely know what I’m going to write.
We’ve had Rachel’s dog, Jade here for just over a week. She’s an old girl, so she would rather sleep than do anything. This means she is a good house-guest. All I have to do is take her outside for a pit stop now and then and feed her.
My only problem was getting the dog names right. I don’t know how many times I called Sunny Jade and vice-versa.
Since this was Jade’s vacation, we also took her for cart rides. One day she got to see a running deer. That made her day.
Jade will be heading home today. I’m sure she missed her family, but she didn’t miss a meal here. I guess the farm is the next best place after home.
Today we have an extra dog in our house. Jade belongs to our daughter Rachel and her family. She’s been with us before. Coming here is like a vacation for Jade, but not for our cats.
Though Jade is an aged dog, she still reacts when she sees any of our cats. To keep the peace, we make sure our inside cats are locked upstairs while the puggle visits. It’s not a real hardship for the cats. They have a comfortable space, food, and water. They also can sleep with us at night. It just bothers them more that they can’t roam the whole house as usual.
Jade doesn’t move fast unless a cat sneaks out and comes into view, then she races across the room. Good thing the cats are faster. Still, it is best if the cats remain confined upstairs. Most of Jades time here is spent sleeping, kind of the way our cats do, so they have a lot in common.
